July Programs and Events

This summer, we have a ton of new programs at Newark Public Library. For adults, we have a series of exercise classes, some craft classes, and a program about local birds. For kids and teens, we have several recurring programs, including free lunches, Teen Thursdays, and Kids Create. In addition, the library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th for the Independence Day holiday.

Adult Programs:

Resume Help - Wednesdays at 1 P.M. and 4 P.M.
Need to create or tweak a resume in order to score that perfect job? Stop by the library to get help!
Cards in the Library - Thursdays at 4 P.M.
Every month, we host a different card game every week. The first Thursday of the month is Euchre, the second is Cribbage, the third is Hearts, and the fourth is Dealer's Choice. 
Learn About NYS Birds and Local Birding - July 7th at 5 P.M.
Our resident bird expert, Conan, will be teaching a class all about local birds, where to find them, and what happens to them throughout the seasons. 
 
PIYO With Shelly - July 8th at 11 A.M.
PIYO, which is a combination of Pilates and yoga, is a fun core-conditioning workout. The class is free, and please wear comfortable clothing and be ready to move!
 
Crafting With Becky Sloane: Painting Flowers - July 10th at 6 P.M.
Learn how to paint flowers with master crafter Becky Sloane! There will be a $10 fee for supplies.
Gadget Guide - July 10th and July 24th at 6 P.M.
Got a gadget or tech toy that's giving you trouble? Our tech guru Graham is here to help!
Mah Jongg - Tuesdays at 5 P.M. 
Come join our weekly Mah Jongg game! Beginners are welcome. 
Sugar Shocker - July 12th at 5 P.M.
There is a ton of hidden sugar in many of the foods and drinks we consume every day. These sugars can impact your health in many ways. This class will teach you the dangers of these sugars, and also teach you how to avoid them and make healthier choices. 
Board Meeting - July 13th at 6:30 P.M.
The monthly meeting of the library's Board of Directors is open to the public. If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns about the operation of the library, please feel free to sit in on the meeting.
Maker Lab: Refrigerator Poetry - July 14th all day
This month at our maker lab station we will be creating take home refrigerator poetry. Make these magnetic words and rearrange them on your fridge to create your own poetry!
 
Z Fitness with Kathy from Refuel - July 15th at 10 A.M. 
Join us for a unique and fun way to get a full body workout! Class is free, and please wear comfortable clothing. 
Board Game Night - July 17th at 4 P.M.
Newark Public Library has a large collection of board games, from classics like Chess to more modern games like Risk. Join a group of fellow board game enthusiasts every month for a few hours of Monday night fun!
Beyond the Covers: Book Discussion - July 17th at 6:30 P.M.
July's book will be Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. This classic novel follows orphan Anne Shirley, who is mistakenly sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who wanted a boy to work on their farm. This book has had countless adaptations, the most recent being the TV series "Anne With an E".

"Not For Ourselves Alone": A Screening and Community Conversation - July 19th at 5:30 P.M.
We will be watching excerpts from the documentary film "Not For Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony". We will conclude with a community discussion to celebrate the anniversary of the first Women's Rights Convention, which was held in Seneca Falls in 1848.
 
Glass Garden Art With Becky Sloane - July 22nd at 11 A.M.
Patrons will choose between a glass garden flower or a glass statuary (pictures of both are available at the library). $9 per person is due at registration. You must give 48 hours notice of cancellation in order to get a refund on the fee. This is a very popular class, and will fill up quickly, so make sure to register ASAP!
Sewing P.J. Shorts with Laurie - July 26th at 6 P.M.
Bring in your favorite sleep pants (no elastic waistbands, please) and we will use them as a pattern to sew a pair of P.J. shorts! Cost will be $10 per person and space is limited to 4 patrons without machines and 2 patrons with their own machines. Payment is due at time of registration.
Turbo Kick with Alyssa from Refuel - July 29th at 10 A.M.
This free class is a combination of kickboxing and dancing set to music. Please wear comfortable clothing! 

Child and Teen Programs:

LEGO Night - July 5th at 6 P.M.
Get creative with NPL's large LEGO collection!
Kids/Teen Free Lunch - Mondays-Thursdays at 12:30 P.M.
During the summer, NPL runs a free lunch program for teens and children below the the age of 18. These free lunches will be available at 12:30 Monday-Thursday from July 10 through August 10th. Magic Marlin Magic Show - July 10th at 1:30 P.M.
Magic Marlin will be here to show off his many tricks! 
Kids Create - Wednesdays at 1:30 P.M., beginning July 12th
Kids will create a variety of projects, including crafts and science experiments.
Teen Thursday - Thursdays at 1:30 P.M., beginning July 13th
Kids going into grades 6-12 are invited to enjoy crafts, games, and other special activities!
Build It! - Mondays at 1:30 P.M., beginning July 17th
In these programs, we will explore building with challenges, fun games, and experiments!
