January Programs and Events

Happy New Year from the Newark Public Library! In 2017, we'll be here to meet all your New Year's resolution needs, whether its to read more, to learn how to use the latest gadgets and technology, or even just to find a comfortable place to spend those long winter afternoons. Relax and sip a hot cup of coffee, courtesy of Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters, while you browse our selection of dvds, music cds, and magazines, or check out one of the amazing programs that we offer.

Adult Programs:

Mah Jongg - Tuesdays at 5 P.M.
Join us for our weekly Mah Jongg night! Everyone is welcome, whether they've played this ancient Chinese tile game before, or are a complete beginner.
Adult Reading and Book Discussion Series - January 4th at 6:30 P.M.
In the penultimate session of Joe O'Toole's discussion series, we will use John Logan's Never the Sinner to discuss the topics of good and evil, and what determines whether a person is one or the other. 



Cards in the Library - Thursdays at 4 P.M.
Our ongoing cards series continues into the new year, with each week of the month focusing on a different game. The first Thursday will be Euchre, the second will be Cribbage, the third will be Hearts, and the last will be Dealer's Choice.
Volunteer Reader Training - January 11th at 1 P.M.
If you've ever been interested in volunteering to help promote literacy in children, here's your chance! Newark Public Library is offering a training which will teach you tips and tricks for reading to children, and give you information about volunteer opportunities within the community.
Board Meeting - January 12th at 6:30 P.M.
The monthly meeting of the Newark Public Library Board of Directors is open to the public. Stop by if you are interested in the running of the library.
Friends of Newark Public Library Book Review Luncheon - January 13th at 12 P.M.
For this month's luncheon, we will be hosting Barb Klein, a local author, life coach, and teacher, as she shares her book, 111 Invitations. Please remember to register for the luncheon, as space is limited!



Painting Party with Steve Duprey - January 28th at 2:30 P.M.
Local artist Steve Duprey will be hosting a class on acrylic painting techniques, geared towards the beginner. Attend, and you'll learn how to create your very own landscape painting. The class is $35, and space is limited - make sure to register online or over the phone.

Child and Teen Programs:

Preschool Storytime - Tuesdays at 10 A.M.
Each Tuesday, Miss Krystina hosts an hour of storytime, which can include dancing, singing, crafts, and of course stories. Bring your preschool age child to shake their sillies out with new friends!
LEGO Night - January 4th at 6 P.M.
Stretch your creativity with our large collection of LEGO blocks, and build a creation that we will display in the library!
Morning Craft - Thursdays at 10 A.M.
Every Thursday, join us for a simple and fun morning craft!
Storytelling with Scratch: Google CS First Computer Coding Course - Thursdays at 4 P.M.
In this exciting eight-week course, kids in fifth grade and up will get a crash course in the basics of coding. This program has very limited space, so make sure that you register, and that you plan to attend all of the sessions. 
Teen Movie - Teens Pick! - January 9th at 6 P.M.
Choose from one of three movies to watch! Make sure you sign up for the event, so that we know who's coming.
Minecraft Club - January 11th at 6 P.M.
Whether you like building giant structures or exploring mods, you can be sure to find some Minecraft fun at the library! You can use or computers or bring your own, but you must have a Minecraft account to play.
Family Movie: The Secret Life of Pets - January 23rd at 6 P.M.
For the family movie this month, we will be screening The Secret Life of Pets, the story of a dog named Max whose world is turned upside down when his owner brings home Duke, a stray whom he instantly dislikes.



Pokemon Club - January 25th at 6 P.M.
Bring your Pokemon cards to the library to battle and trade with friends!
