The Newark Public Library is hosting
an eight-week program designed to teach kids in grades 5-8 the basics of coding.
Every Thursday from January 5th
through February 23rd, a small group will meet at 4pm to learn how
to design their own stories, create and share animations, and learn how
technology is used in the film and media industries. The CS First Storytelling
club is a social event, and no previous computer or coding experience is
necessary – any child within the age limits is encouraged to join. Newark
Public Library’s Youth Services Librarian, Krystina Dippel, says “I am excited
to bring this excellent opportunity for kids to learn coding to the library”.
Due to the immersive and one-on-one
nature of the program, space is extremely limited. There will only be 10 spaces
available in the program, and we ask that everyone who sign up commit to attending
all 8 sessions. If the program fills up, we will have a wait list, and,
depending on interest, we may host another session of the program in the
future.
In order to register for the
program, please call the library at 331-4370, or sign up online at www.newarklibrary.org. Scratch is a project of the Lifelong
Kindergarten Group at MIT Media Lab. It is available for free at
scratch.mit.edu.
