September Programs and Events

 Although summer is winding to an end and school is starting up again, the Newark Public Library is not slowing down on our programs and activities! We have a variety of programs designed to appeal to people of all ages, from preschool to adult. To sign up for an activity, click the link below, or call the library at any time during opening hours at (315) 331-4370. If you're looking for something to do when there is not an available program, feel free to come in and read a book, use a computer, play a board game, or check out one of our extensive collection.

Adult Programs:

Cards in the Library - Thursdays at 4 P.M., September 30th at 4 P.M.
 Every Thursday, we host a different game of cards. The first week of the month is Euchre, the second is Cribbage, the third is Hearts, and the last is dealer's choice. This month, we also have a board game with the group, on Friday, September 30th.
Mah Jongg - Tuesdays at 5 P.M.
Mah Jongg is a fun and addicting tile game that originated in China. Whether you are new or an experienced player, join us every Tuesday to play!
Resume Help - Wednesdays at 1 P.M. and 4 P.M.
Whether you need to create an all new resume or spice up an existing one, NPL staff will help you every step of the way. You can either call ahead to schedule at (315) 331-4370, or just drop by.
Adult Reading and Book Discussion Series - September 7th at 6:30 P.M.
A new series of book discussions starts this month, facilitated by Joe O'Toole. Over the course of six months, we will read a series of plays that explore the topics of good and evil, and what makes a person good or bad. If you sign up for this discussion group, please plan to attend all six sessions. The plays that we will discuss are:
Mrs. Warren's Profession by George Bernard Shaw
Orpheus Descending by Tennessee Williams
Agnes of God by John Pielmeier
Never the Sinner by John Logan
August: Osage County by Tracy Letts
Board Meeting - September 8th at 6:30 P.M.
If you are interested in what the Library Board of Trustees does, please stop by the board meeting, which is open to any member of the public who wishes to attend. 
Friends of the Newark Public Library Luncheon - September 9th at 12 P.M.

Six times a year, the Friends of the Newark Public Library host a luncheon, at which they invite an author or presenter to discuss a book on an area of local interest. This month, they will welcome local author and retired undertaker Stanley Swan to discuss his book, "Undertakings of an Undertaker". Please remember to sign up, as spots are limited, and there will be a $5 fee to attend.
Adult Writers' Group - September 9th and September 23rd at 4 P.M.
If you are a writer who is interested in sharing ideas, critiques, and and skills with others, please join our adult writer's group. Anyone is welcome, regardless of what they write.
Adult Craft Class - September 12th at 6 P.M.
Using reclaimed barn wood and beach stones, you will learn how to create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind art project. Please make sure to register, as space is limited. There will also be a supplies fee of $5, payable at the class.
Gadget Guide - September 12th and September 26th at 6 P.M.
If a gadget, device, or other piece of technology is giving you trouble, bring it to the library, where we will help you learn how to use it.
Board Game Night - September 19th at 4 P.M.
If you're looking for some fun on a Monday afternoon, come and play one of our board games!

Child and Teen Programs: 

Preschool Storytime - Tuesdays at 10 A.M.
Join us for an hour of stories, singing, dancing, and fun!
LEGO Night - September 7th at 6 P.M.
Come and use your imagination by building and creating with our large collection of LEGOs.
Teen Pizza and a Movie - September 12th at 6 P.M.


Join us for pizza and a movie at the library! This month's movie will be "The Fault in Our Stars", starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, and based on the best-selling novel by John Green. Please make sure to register so that we know how much pizza to get.
Minecraft Club - September 14th at 6 P.M.
Here at NPL, we have several accounts with unlimited access to Minecraft. Come and play with your friends!
Recipe Party: Butterscotch Haystacks - September 19th at 6 P.M.
Learn an easy, fun, and delicious recipe!
Boondoggle Craft - September 20th at 6 P.M.

 Learn how to make a colorful lanyard with the technique of boondoggle!
After School Game Time - September 21st at 3 P.M.
Looking for a place to relax and unwind after a long day at school? Come to the library to play games with your friends! As well as a large collection of traditional board games, we also have a PS4 and some tablets on which to play. 
TechTime: Ozobots - September 21st at 5 P.M.

An Ozobot is a tiny robot that you can learn how to control. Come and see a demonstration, and learn how to play with one!
Family Fun Literacy Event - September 26th at 6 P.M.

Come to the Park Presbyterian Church for an event to promote literacy. The event will feature stories, book giveaways, and other activities.
Morning Craft - September 22nd and September 29th at 10 A.M.
Join us for a morning craft!
After School Craft: Cloud Paint - September 28th at 3 P.M.
Stop by the library after school to create your very own craft using cloud paint!
Pokemon Club - September 28th at 6 P.M.
Bring your Pokemon cards to the library to trade and battle with your friends!
